The concept of a ‘creative linear process’ is key to achieving a successful project. A linear project is one that proceeds consistently and sequentially through each of the project phases and stages, avoiding loops back in response to external factors or to accommodate variations to the scope of work or the project plan. Design on the other hand is a creative process, requiring testing of ideas and iteration of proposals to arrive at optimal solutions, which by its nature cannot be undertaken in a wholly predictable and linear fashion.
Each construction project is unique, and some small deviations from a linear process are to be expected. However, assuming that ample provision is included for creativity and design development within the appropriate project stages, then the closer you can get to a purely linear process the more likely you are to minimise cost, reduce timeframe, and to maximise design and construction quality.
There are many circumstances in which a non-linear project process can occur, some may be deliberate and desirable while some may become necessary due to factors beyond the awareness or control of the project team. Typically, non-linear processes result from difficulties with cost, approvals, unforeseen site conditions, changes to design or project scope.

With any design project there is a delicate balance to be struck; to avoid uncontrolled design iterations and scheme changes that would undermine the project process, while ensuring that robust management of the project process doesn’t stifle the creative potential of the scheme.
This balance can be achieved by implementing a ‘creative linear process’; creating a solid foundation of preparation and background information, feeding that into a creative process with sufficient skill and resource to fully explore and consider design ideas, before developing a comprehensive package of detailed design and specification information, ready for a smooth and efficient construction process.
The ‘creative linear project’ approach nurtures design and creativity while also maintaining a coherent and efficient project process; enhancing quality of design and construction while also exercising the best possible control of programme and budget; for overall project success.
